Post-quake relief fund used to build luxury hospital
A city in southwest China, badly damaged in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, lavished 240 million yuan (US$38 million) on a deluxe hospital and part of the money came from disaster relief funds.
Pan Gao, a government spokesman of Jianyang City, Sichuan Province, said most of money was raised by the hospital itself and only a small portion of several million yuan came from the relief funds.
He said the hospital looked posh in photos posted online because it was newly decorated with nice photographic effects, but the hospital is not as luxurious as a five-star hotel as some media claimed.
"We built this hospital to improve medical services for local people," Pan said, noting that a bed in a normal ward costs only 30 yuan a day.
The 60,000-square-meter hospital is the best equipped and decorated hospital in Sichuan, according to a report by China Radio today.
