Powerful 6.0 quake shakes buildings in Taipei
A powerful earthquake measured at 6.0 magnitude by the US Geological Survey shook buildings in Taipei today but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The USGS said the quake struck at 10:03am (0203 GMT), 48 kilometers east of Nantou in central Taiwan at a depth of 20.7 kilometers.
Taiwan's central weather bureau put the magnitude at 6.1.
The quake was felt across the island, according to the bureau but the national fire agency said it had not received reports of damage or casualties.
Nantou county was the epicenter of a 7.6-magnitude quake in September 1999 which killed around 2,400 people in the deadliest natural disaster in the island's recent history.
Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is regularly hit by earthquakes.
