Praise for Nigeria’s decision on Taiwan
CHINA highly appreciates Nigeria’s move to close Taiwan’s office in Abuja, its capital, foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said yesterday.
“It has completely solved a leftover problem affecting political trust between China and Nigeria and removed political obstacles that have disrupted the healthy development of bilateral relations,” Lu said at a regular news briefing.
On Wednesday, the Nigerian government said it had ordered the closure of Taiwan’s office and the moving of its trade mission to Lagos.
Nigeria has no official relations with Taiwan, but Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the island’s office in the capital had engaged in activities exceeding its capacity and had violated the “One China” principle.
At a meeting with Wang on Wednesday, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari had spoken highly of the cooperation between Nigeria and China.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s reaffirmation of its commitment to the One China policy.
A joint statement issued after Wang’s meeting with his Nigerian counterpart Geoffrey Onyeama noted the policy to be at the core of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Wang, having delivered a message from Chinese President Xi Jinping to Buhari, expressed his appreciation of Nigeria’s stance.
The One China policy sustains the political foundation of China-Nigeria cooperation, he said.
Speaking during their meeting at the presidential palace in Abuja, Buhari said he hoped more Chinese companies would contribute to the economic development of the West African country.
Wang said China will help Nigeria achieve its economic diversification plan by developing infrastructure, including railway and power projects, and enhance agricultural technology and education, among others.
Nigeria was the last leg of Wang’s trip to five African countries in keeping with China’s long diplomatic tradition of making Africa its first overseas destination each year.
Wang’s Africa trip, which began on Friday, also included visits to Madagascar, Zambia, Tanzania and the Republic of Congo.
