Pregnant woman rescued after jumping in river

FIREFIGHTERS rescued woman who is eight months pregnant after she jumped into a river after quarreling with her husband in Fujian Province, a local news portal reported today.

The woman and her unborn child are both in stable condition, a doctor said after an initial checkup.

The couple quarreled over trivial matters on their way home after having a meal with friends in a KTV karaoke parlor on Tuesday evening. The husband reportedly had been drinking, the report said.

As they walked near a bridge in Dehua County, Quanzhou City, the woman jumped into the river. Her husband jumped in, too, trying to rescue her, the report said. The couple huddled together in the water, struggling without being able to reach safety.

The scene drew a crowd near the bridge. Firefighters used ropes and a ladder to pull them out of the water and sent the woman to a hospital.

The man, who seemed tipsy, was emotional after the incident, the report said. Relatives were taking care of the couple after the woman left the hospital, the report said.
