Pregnant women busted for stealing

A GANG of thieves who repeatedly got away with their crimes because they were either pregnant or breastfeeding has been busted by police in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province.

The group, consisting of 46 women and one man, stole items worth more than 1.5 million yuan (US$229,656) on more than 150 occasions in shopping malls across Hangzhou. The women were never detained because under Chinese law police have the option of releasing pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers on bail, putting them under house arrest or detaining them.

Once they are no longer pregnant or breastfeeding, women suspected of committing crimes should face legal proceedings, the law states.

Suspected gang member Zhu Qing, 26, was caught shoplifting 47 times. She was released each time and was never confined in a detention center, Qianjiang Evening News reported yesterday.

Most of the women had several children and some even had abortions to avoid having the child, and get pregnant again to avoid legal punishment.
