Prematurely-born twins of opposite sex found abandoned in foam box at wet market

A PAIR of healthy twin infants were found abandoned in a foam box early this morning, less than 24 hours after they were thought to have been born in Xining city, in western China’s Qinghai Province.

Many people called police after they heard the news to say they wanted to adopt the boy and girl, reports said.

Local police said finding the babies’ biological parents would be their first priority.

A female vendor was the first to discover the newborns. She told police she opened a foam box at a wet market in the Chengxi District of the city about 8am and found the twins inside.

She said the babies had on adequate clothing and there was 20 yuan (US$3.28) left inside the box.

Police rushed the babies to a local hospital, arriving 30 minutes after they were discovered.

Doctors with the Qinghai Province Women and Children’s Hospital said they were premature babies and likely were delivered less than 24 hours when they were found.

The newborns don't have any physical disability, doctors said.

The boy weighs 2 kilograms and is in stable condition. The girl weighs 1.8 kilograms and is weaker.

Doctors found both infants had lower-than-normal body temperatures, which can raise risks of bleeding in the lungs.

They were under observation inside incubators while further exams were under way.

Police told those who wanted to adopt the babies that they would have to apply through due legal procedures.
