Premier Li pledges to work with Obama

NEW Chinese Premier Li Keqiang yesterday pledged to work with US President Barack Obama to forge "a new type of relationship" for the sake of peace in the Asia-Pacific region, and said the war of words about cyber-hacking must end.

Li said that despite their differences, conflict between the world's largest and second-largest economies was not inevitable as long as both countries respected each other's major concerns and managed their differences.

China's new leaders "attach great importance" to relations that meet the "fundamental interests of people in both countries and serves the global trend of peace and development," Li told reporters at the traditional premier's news conference that follows the close of the annual legislative session.

"China and the United States should have sound interactions in the Asia-Pacific region and starting from this we can move to build a new type of relationship between powers," Li said.

"That will also be good for peace and development in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large."

Victim of hacking

Li dismissed US hacking accusations against China as "groundless."

A US computer security company said last month that a Chinese military unit in Shanghai was likely behind a series of hacking attacks mostly targeting the US.

China has countered on numerous occasions that it, too, is a victim of hacking.

"I think we should not make groundless accusations against each other, and spend more time doing practical things that will contribute to cyber-security," Li said.

Li called cyber-security a worldwide problem and said: "China does not support, indeed, we are opposed to, such activities."

Asked about Sino-Russian relations, Li said more practical cooperation is needed and both sides should leverage their economic integrity.

He said he hopes bilateral trade can increase rapidly from the current level of about US$80 billion a year.

China has been working with its neighbors to advance mutually beneficial cooperation and take such cooperation to a new level by joining respective strengths so as to make peaceful development and cooperation an irresistible trend, the premier said.
