Premier Wen vows to protect street children

CHINESE Premier Wen Jiabao pledged to intensify efforts to protect and help street children during a web chat jointly held today.

"The causes for street children are complicated. But in whatever situations, we cannot leave our children to live unsheltered," Wen said.

Wen said he has instructed the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Civil Affairs to intensify the rescue efforts.

The protection of street children gained public attention after Yu Jianrong, a professor of rural development, set up a microblog account on January 25, calling for the rescue of abducted children forced into begging.

On February 10, the Ministry of Public Security issued a statement, encouraging the participation of civilians in providing clues to help the police rescue minors, especially those being abused and forced to beg on the streets.

Wen said he believes the problem will be solved with the joint efforts of local governments, departments in charge and the public.
