Premier celebrates DPRK friendship

CHINESE Premier Wen Jiabao and Kim Jong Il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, attended a celebration in Pyongyang yesterday marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the closing ceremony of China-DPRK Friendship Year.
In a speech at the May Day Stadium, Premier Wen said China and the DPRK had understood, supported and helped each other during the past 60 years despite changes in the international situation.
The ruling parties and peoples of China and the DPRK had steadily promoted the development of bilateral ties, contributing to regional peace and stability, Wen said.
China-DPRK Friendship Year featured a variety of celebrations and exchanges, which had enhanced the friendship between the two countries, strengthened cooperation in various fields and injected new vitality into bilateral ties, he said.
China-DPRK relations had arrived at a new historic point and China was ready to join hands with the DPRK to further consolidate and develop the traditional friendship, expand exchanges and cooperation to better serve the well-being of both peoples, Wen said.
DPRK Premier Kim Yong Il said the establishment of diplomatic relations 60 years ago was an epoch-making event and his country was determined to consolidate and develop DPRK-China friendship.
On Sunday, Wen held talks with Premier Kim on efforts to further bilateral ties.
The China-DPRK friendship, fostered by founders of the two countries, had been constantly strengthened and improved, Wen said. China is ready to work with the DPRK to protect, consolidate and promote friendly relations between the two nations in order to benefit their peoples and enhance regional stability and development.
On the nuclear issue, Wen said China appreciated the DPRK commitment to making the peninsula nuclear free. It was the consensus of the international community that dialogue and consultation was the only way to solve the peninsula's nuclear issue, Wen said, pledging China's readiness to strengthen exchange and consultation with the DPRK.
Kim said it was the wish of late leader Kim Il Sung to realize denuclearization on the peninsula. The DPRK side had never given up this wish, and was willing to have bilateral and multilateral dialogues to this end.
