President Xi: Let no one throw Asia into chaos

Asia is facing new challenges to its stability, Chinese President Xi Jinping said yesterday as he warned that no one should be allowed to throw the region into chaos.

Xi, speaking at an annual international forum on the southern Chinese island of Hainan, said there should be no tolerance for those who foster "chaos for selfish gains" and reiterated that China would firmly uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Tensions have soared in recent weeks with North Korea threatening nuclear war after the United Nations imposed fresh sanctions over its latest atomic test and the US and South Korea launched joint war games.

"We need to make concerted efforts to resolve major difficulties to ensure stability in Asia," Xi said.

"Stability in Asia now faces new challenges as hot spot issues keep emerging and both traditional and non-traditional security threats exist," he added.

"The international community should advocate the vision of comprehensive security and cooperative security, so as to turn the global village into a big stage for common development rather than an arena where gladiators fight each other. And no one should be allowed to throw the region, or even the whole world, into chaos for selfish gains," Xi said at the Boao Forum for Asia.

Xi also said that China would continue to properly handle differences and frictions with relevant nations.

While upholding its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, China will maintain good relations with its neighbors, as well as maintain overall peace and stability in the region, the president said.

'Unremitting efforts'

"China will continue to properly handle differences and frictions with the relevant countries," Xi said.

"On international and regional hot spot issues, China will continue to play a constructive role, adhere to peace and facilitating talks and make unremitting efforts to properly handle relevant issues through dialogue and negotiations."

The Chinese president also reminded countries China represents a good business opportunity for neighbors and the world, saying that over the next five years China's imports will reach US$10 trillion while its companies plan to invest US$500 billion overseas.

"The more China develops, the more opportunities for development it brings the world and Asia," Xi said.

China will focus on doing well in its domestic affairs while properly handling relations with foreign countries, he said.

The world economy is still in a state of profound readjustment, while Asian countries see comparatively better economic performance, Xi added. However, it is difficult for Asian economies to break away from unfavorable impact from the outside.

The three-day Boao gathering has brought together leaders in government, business and academia in Asia and other continents every year since 2001 to discuss pressing issues in the region and the world.

Among political and financial leaders at this year's event are Myanmar President Thein Sein, International Monetary Fund managing Director Christine Lagarde, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.
