President Xi calls for energy revolution

CHINA faces challenges to cope with a rising demand for energy, given supply restraints, huge environmental costs and old technology, President Xi Jinping said yesterday.

He called for more efforts to revolutionize energy production and consumption.

China needs to take steps to rein in irrational energy use and control energy consumption by fully implementing energy-saving policies, said Xi, presiding over a leadership meeting on financial and economic work.

He said energy supply reform would establish a diversified system involving the cleaner use of coal and other fuels, including nuclear power.

Xi urged further efforts in technology innovation to enable the industry to become a powerhouse to fuel economic growth. The country will also push forward reforms in pricing mechanisms and try to nurture a competitive energy market, he said.

Niu Li, an economist at the State Information Center, a government think tank, said shale gas, gas hydrates, electric vehicles and energy-efficient housing were likely to be important areas in boosting an energy revolution.

“After the financial crisis, all nations are trying to nurture new energy technologies as a new engine to drive economic growth,” Niu said.

Xi said China is working on a guideline to direct energy production and consumption and will speed up revisions of outdated regulations.

Authorities will update coal-burning power generators that fail to meet emission standards and continue to develop long-distance power transmission lines.

New nuclear projects, with safety the overriding priority, will be launched as soon as possible on the east coast.

China will also expand oil and gas cooperation with countries in central Asia, Middle East, America and Africa.

The country will also intensify its efforts in energy exploration and exploitation and build more oil and gas pipelines and storage facilities, Xi said.
