President praises work of Hong Kong’s leader
THE central government fully approves of the leadership of Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying and the work of the special administrative region’s government which has shown itself “unafraid of challenges,” Chinese leaders told him in Beijing yesterday.
The city was roiled recently by three months of illegal Occupy Central demonstrations.
After listening to Leung’s report on current situation in Hong Kong and the work of the HKSAR administration, President Xi Jinping said the central government “fully recognizes” the work of the chief executive and his administration in advancing political reform, developing the economy, improving people’s livelihoods as well as maintaining the rule of law and the overall stability in the city.
The development of the regions’s political system should be carried out in accordance with the real situation in Hong Kong and in a legal and orderly manner, Xi said.
He stressed such development should be beneficial to residents, social prosperity and stability, and be conducive to safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests.
Earlier in the day, Premier Li Keqiang also expressed his approval for Leung’s work.
“Over the last year, you and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s government have been unafraid of challenges, have united in struggle, steadily pushed forward various projects, maintained Hong Kong’s broad stability and realized new development,” he told Leung.
“The central government offers full approval of your work and the work of the Special Administrative Region’s government,” the premier added.
Hong Kong is an important financial and trade center, whose achievements have not come easily and should be valued and given attention by the city’s people, Li said.
He said he hoped “that Hong Kong fully gives play to its strengths and maintains a good business environment and competitiveness.”
Leung said that over the coming year his government would dedicate itself to maintaining Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability and “pushing forward in accordance with the law development of the political system.”
Hong Kong was handed back to China’s sovereignty on July 1, 1997.
