Primary school slasher of 17 sentenced to death

A PRIMARY school teacher who stabbed 16 young pupils and a teacher in a knife rampage in south China in April was sentenced to death yesterday.

Zhanjiang Intermediate People's Court handed down its verdict on Chen Kangbing, 33.

Chen barged into Leicheng First Primary School in Guangdong Province on April 28 and started stabbing and slashing with a 40-centimeter knife.

While no one died in the attack, two pupils were seriously injured. The victims, mostly fourth or fifth graders, suffered wounds to their heads, backs and arms.

The court said Chen was "an oversensitive person," who thought some pupils in uniforms of the school in question were "saying bad things about him."

Chen confessed to all charges and did not say in court whether he would appeal the death penalty.

Chen was the third school attacker to be sentenced to death this year in China.

Zheng Minsheng, 42, was executed in east China's Fujian Province on April 28 for a deadly elementary school attack on March 23.

Zheng killed eight children and injured four others in the attack because he was fired and dumped by his girlfriend and wanted to take revenge on society.

Xu Yuyuan, 47, who attacked 29 children and three teachers with a meat cleaver last month in a kindergarten in Taixing City in Jiangsu Province, was executed on May 30.

Xu said he lost money gambling, was frustrated in relationships and wanted to vent his anger.

In the wake of the attacks, Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu ordered police to work with education authorities and step up security near schools.
