Prison break masterminds revealed

POLICE in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region said they have determined the two chief culprits in last week's prison break that left one guard dead and sparked a nationwide manhunt.

Dong Jijia and Qiao Haiqiang are reported to have confessed they were the masterminds in the jailbreak and had been planning the escape for more than a year. They only recruited Li Hongbin and Gao Bo half a month before the attempt, according to the Inner Mongolia Morning News today.

The four inmates broke out of the Hohhot No.2 Prison on October 17, killing guard Lan Jianguo and stealing a cab, before one of them was shot dead and the others were arrested 67 hours later.

Gao was fatally shot in the head after he refused to surrender when cornered by police on October 20. Officers thought the three who survived would blame Gao for the escape.

They claimed that the found the knives they used in the escape hidden in a workshop, probably left by other inmates. Police were unable to confirm that.
