Prison con man given a further 10 years

A CONVICTED kidnapper who was allowed to run a confidence trick from his prison cell has been ordered to serve a further 10 years and eight months after being found guilty of fraud and blackmail.

Convict Wang Dong will remain behind bars for 13 years and nine months, after taking into account the time he had to serve on his initial sentence, the thepaper.cn said yesterday.

Wang was also fined 220,000 yuan (US$35,400) at the Nehe City People’s Court in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, the report said.

The new sentence was handed down in April and Wang has not appealed it, the report said.

Wang, who is incarcerated at Nehe City Prison in Heilongjiang, was found guilty of using WeChat to dupe women out of cash and cajoling one of them into having cybersex with him.

The inmate used a smartphone to contact women via the messaging service and after winning their trust tricked them into investing a combined 116,000 yuan in various projects, the report said, adding that he also engaged in cybersex with the wife of a policeman.

When the woman sent Wang naked pictures of herself, he used them to blackmail her husband. The husband, however, alerted the authorities.

During an investigation by authorities in Heilongjiang it was determined that numerous officials accepted bribes for helping Wang or turning a blind eye to his activities.

A total of 14 prison workers, including its director Gao Qingxiang, were sacked, while four police officials were prosecuted for various offenses including abuse of power, dereliction of duty and graft, according to the report.
