Prison escapee captured

A man who escaped from a prison in northeastern China Heilongjiang Province nearly two weeks ago was caught by police today.

Chen Congcong, 21, was caught at around 3pm in the provincial Harbin city after Heilongjiang police were tipped off about his whereabouts on Saturday, according to the Heilongjiang Public Security Bureau's Website.

He broke out of Liming prison with Sun Xingcheng in Harbin on February 23. Police warned nearby residents that Chen ran away dressed like a woman and could be extremely dangerous.

Chen also attempted to get a fake ID and start working, Xinhua news agency reported.

Twenty-three-year-old Sun was caught on a highway to Beijing only three days after they escaped. Sun tried to kill himself with a broken glass bottle but was stopped by police, the report said.

Their escape on February 23 sparked a nationwide manhunt and police offered a 50,000 yuan (US$7,325) reward for information leading to their capture.

According to a previous report, the two escapees were both serving a 10-year jail term for robbery. An unnamed lawyer said they could be sentenced to another five years jail because of the escape.

Police have not revealed details about how he managed to make his getaway.

Three inmates in northern China who killed a guard, broke out of prison, and sparked a nationwide manhunt last October stood trial last month.

A member of the China Law Society, Zhang Ping, said the three would certainly receive death sentences as two were on death row and one was serving a life sentence before the escape.
