Prison escapees caught

POLICE have caught all three men involved in a breakout from a prison in Jieshou City in east China's Anhui Province on May 23, a senior police officer said yesterday.

Cai Zhaoliang, police chief of Fuyang City, said the three were caught in neighboring Henan Province on Thursday.

Cai said Wang Hanyu, the chief instigator of the prison break, died after rupturing his femoral artery on the prison's iron gate but his three fellow inmates had escaped. The three, including a 17-year-old in custody, had been convicted of theft and robbery.

Cai said the Jieshou Prison was overcrowded and lacked sufficient police power to guarantee security. The four shared the same ward with 15 other inmates. They staged a fight and escaped when policemen opened the door to stop them.

Cai said Ma Hui, a prison officer, had failed to lock a corridor door and the four hit him on the head and ran towards the gate.

Ma and another prison officer are being investigated while the prison chief and a prosecutor have been removed from their posts.
