Prison escapees to be executed

THREE prison escapees in northern China will soon be executed, a police officer said today after they killed one and arrested the other three of the group who murdered a guard during their weekend breakout.

Police of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous today gave more information about the capture of the detainees, which left one prisoner dead, and one guard and one hostage hurt.

The prisoners fled when they spotted police at 8:20am yesterday, according to Changjiang Daily today. They stole a farm tractor and kidnapped a female farm worker surnamed Hou as a hostage.

Hou suffered minor cuts to her face and hands, but was traumatized by the incident, according to the report.

Police officer Guo Yanjun was stabbed in the leg by escapee Gao Bo when he tried to rescue Hou. Gao was later shot dead.

Escapee Qiao Haiqiang tried to kill himself with a knife he made in prison, but it proved too blunt. He was arrested after he fell from a four-story building.

The other two surrendered.

The police also revealed more details about the October 17 escape amid media speculation of lax security at the prison.

The four timed their escape for the changing of the guards, according to the report.

They killed one guard with a knife they made in prison then cut off his finger so that they could pass the fingerprint identification system on the gate. They took his key card so that they could pass the other gates.

A villager surnamed Wang and a shop owner in Helin County tipped off the police about the escapees' whereabouts.

Zhang Youen, deputy director of the Inner Mongolia Public Security Department said, they will be rewarded as promised.
