Prison escapees to face court soon

THREE of the four inmates who allegedly escaped from a north China jail last month will soon face court as the case has been forwarded to prosecutors.

They will be charged with manslaughter and escaping prison, Xinhua news agency reported today.

Qiao Haiqiang, Li Hongbing, Gao Bo and Dong Jiaji allegedly broke out of Hohhot No.2 Prison of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on October 17, sparking a nationwide manhunt.

They killed prison guard Lan Jianguo and stole a cab, before one of them was shot dead and the others were arrested three days later.

Police said the four inmates were equipped with four knives, some of which they had made themselves. Qiao, Li and Gao Bo allegedly stabbed the warder while Dong stood watch. After killing Lan, the four robbed 3,800 yuan (US$556.63) from him, the report said.

Qiao and Dong had been studying prison break schemes since July, Xinhua reported. They had planned to steal an oil tanker from a construction site in the prison but had to drop the idea because the truck stopped work before they were ready to escape.

Gao was fatally shot in the head after he refused to surrender when cornered by police on October 20.
