Prison for valuer in graft case
A PROPERTY valuation company's manager assistant has been jailed for 12 years for his part in the embezzlement of relocation cash worth almost 5.71 million yuan (US$870,000).
Zhang Tao was convicted of graft by a Beijing court, the Legal Evening News reported yesterday.
The court heard that Zhang collaborated with officials of the Yongding Township government, fabricating documents to gain demolition compensation worth 3.4 million yuan for a mistress of Yan Yongxi, former deputy head of the government of Beijing's Mentougou District, from 2006 to 2008.
Zhang was also accused of acquiring another two lots of demolition compensation for Yan's brother. His lawyer said Zhang hadn't benefited financially and was only an accomplice in the graft. But the court decided that Zhang had played a major role.
Yan, described as "the most corrupt official in Beijing" by local media, is awaiting a verdict on charges of taking bribes and embezzling public funds involving nearly 42 million yuan.
Yan, 47, is said to have taken advantage of his position to make up three separate cases of land acquisition and forged agreements for relocation compensation, defrauding the government of land-use fees.
Yan is also said to have accepted 5.56 million yuan in bribes and three properties worth 1.24 million yuan to help developers win government projects in the district.
