Prisoner tunnels to freedom

POLICE have offered rewards of up to 50,000 yuan (US$7,324)) after a prisoner tunneled his way to freedom from a central China jail.

Hundreds of prison officers and armed police in Changde City, Hunan Province, are scouring the countryside for Liu Hong after a headcount discovered he was missing around 8am on Sunday, Xiaoxiang Morning Post reported today.

Liu, who was serving time for robbery, had his term added to 20 years in January this year after a failed escape attempt, prison officers told the newspaper.

The officers found Liu had escaped through a hole he had dug through the jail wall. Combing the areas nearby, they found he had stolen a cotton cloth, a mobile phone and some money from a villager and escaped on a motorcycle.

Police have a cold snap on their side – temperatures have dropped below freezing and they figure the escapee needs somewhere to hide indoors.
