Prisoners dealt in drugs

TWO prisoners in central China's Henan Province were found guilty of selling and using drugs brought into the jail by a guard.

Hao Shendang, who was serving a 20-year sentence in Luoyang Prison for intentional injury, contacted a drug dealer in eastern Anhui Province through fellow inmate Song Xuefa last December, according to the Xigong District People's Court in Luoyang City, China Youth Daily reported yesterday.

Hao's girlfriend obtained the drugs from the dealer, hid the stash in a roast chicken and left it and some clothes in a grocery store near the prison, the court heard.

Then Hao asked prison guard Wang Jingwan to bring him the bag, claiming his girlfriend had sent him clothes for his birthday, the report said.

Hao then split the drugs into 50 packs and sold them to other inmates for 50 yuan (US$7.87) to 100 yuan each.

Hao and Song were convicted of drug dealing in May, which added two and one year respectively to their terms.

Wang was demoted and fined for bringing the bag to Hao, as guards are not allowed to transport goods for inmates privately, the report said.

This is another scandal to hit China's prisons. Recently, an inmate took advantage of lax security to escape.

Wang Zhenqing, who was serving a 10-year sentence for robbery in Hebei No. 3 Prison in Shenzhou City, escaped in September.

An investigation revealed that the prison keys were poorly secured and many inmates had copies.
