Probe after woman dies in police custody

PROSECUTORS in southeast China’s Fujian Province are investigating the death of a middle-aged woman who had been taken for questioning by railway police.

Bruises were found on the body of the 59-year-old, surnamed Pan, who was being investigated in connection with reselling rail tickets, Xinhua news agency reported.

Her daughter, surnamed Wei, said three police officers brought her mother to her home in Fuzhou, capital of Fujian, at 11am on Tuesday and searched the house, before going to Pan’s home.

Later, Wei went to the railway police station, where at 6pm officers emerged with her mother and said she was being taken to a detention house.

But at 9pm police told Wei that her mother was receiving emergency treatment at hospital.

When Wei got there, doctors said her mother had died.

Wei said she saw bruises on the body of her mother.

Police and prosecutors are now investigating.
