Probe finds dry cleaners not whiter than white

BEIJING branches of leading dry cleaning chains routinely ill-treat customers' garments, according to an undercover investigation.

Customers think they are paying for their best clothes to be carefully dry cleaned and ironed, when actually they are dumped on the ground, stamped on by workers and water-washed in rusty, dirty machines, China Business Network reported.

In addition to hygiene issues, the report also said the dry cleaners covered up damage caused by low-cost treatments.

These claims came after a reporter spent 20 days working at two Beijing stores run by Fornet and Pride.

The undercover reporter, hired as a dry cleaner, found the stores cleaned most of the clothes with water - including dry clean-only items.

The report also said it is common practice that when expensive garments are color damaged, staff bleach them to cover it up.

China-France joint operation Fornet is a leading high-end dry cleaning brand with 60 branches in Shanghai.

A Fornet manager in Shanghai said local stores adhered to "strict hygiene and operational standards."

"We're happy to open our workshops to any customer upon request, said the manager.

Fornet's Beijing headquarters said it is currently investigating the store that featured in the news report.
