Probe into Taiwan official who was ‘ordered to quit’
TAIWAN leader Ma Ying-jeou’s office released an official document yesterday allowing the resignation of Chang Hsien-yao, deputy chief of the island’s Mainland Affairs Council.
Lin Chu-chia was named to replace Chang, and Shih Fui-fen appointed as a deputy chief of the council, according to the document.
The council initially announced that Chang had stepped down on August 14 for family reasons.
However, Chang told reporters he had been ordered to quit amid unspecified allegations against him which he branded as “concocted.”
The row took another twist yesterday when the council said that the Investigation Bureau had launched a probe into Chang.
Since part of the suspicion regarding Chang’s work has been related to Taiwan’s security, “we decided to transfer the case to the Investigation Bureau for further investigation,” a council spokeswoman told reporters.
She would not be drawn on details of concerns, saying that the move was prompted by a tip-off.
Taiwan media suggested Chang might have leaked classified information during previous talks with the mainland.
The United Daily News quoted an unidentified government official as saying the investigation could be connected with “leaking secrets,” including the bottom line in negotiations.
Chang rebuffed the allegations in comments on a pre-recorded talk show. Cable news network TVBS released footage before the show was broadcast last night.
“I knew too many things, some of them I felt were improper and made frank suggestions. Maybe my suggestions made some people unhappy,” he said.
Chang compared the investigation against him to being hunted down by a “mafia.”
“I’ve written down everything in my will, I’ve made preparations,” he added, wiping away tears.
Ties between Taiwan and the mainland have improved since 2008 when Ma of the Kuomintang party came to power.
