Probe into death of man suspected of violations

THE death of an engineer who was being questioned about suspected violations is being investigated, prosecutors in Wenzhou, a city in east China's Zhejiang Province, said.

Yu Qiyi, 42, who worked for the state-run Wenzhou Industry Investment Group, suffered an "unexpected accident" around 10:30pm on Monday and died at 3:15am yesterday after emergency treatment at a local hospital, according to an official statement published on a local news portal (www.66wa.com).

The death of Yu, a Party member, triggered speculation about whether he had been tortured to force a confession when he was under "double designation," a procedure in which Party members are asked to confess or explain wrongdoings at a designated time and place.

The prosecutors' statement gave no further details on the "unexpected accident."

An online post claimed police concluded Yu had drowned. The unidentified Internet user said that was "ridiculous" as Yu was known to be a keen swimmer and that it wasn't possible for a healthy man to drown in a room.
