Probe into illegal wages

A FINANCIAL institution in Cangzhou City, Hebei Province, was under scrutiny after it illegally handed out 3 million yuan (US$459,312) in wages and bonuses to its 61 employees in less than two years.

Most of the workers of the Rural Credit Cooperative in Cangzhou reportedly received more than 200,000 yuan in annual base salary plus bumper bonuses, according to online posts published on Baidu.com in March.

The highest monthly salary of a worker even surpassed the yearly disposable income of a local resident, according to a detailed salary slip posted online, netizens said. The disposable income of each Cangzhou resident stood at 16,116 yuan last year, The Beijing News reported yesterday.

A mid-level official could get 500,000 yuan annual salary and high-ranking officials could earn double, according to the post.

Hebei Provincial Rural Credit Cooperative started investigating following online allegations and has ruled its Cangzhou branch paid excessive salaries that violated regulations.
