Probe into lavish banquet at former training center
THE Party’s disciplinary watchdog in Huangshan, a city in Anhui Province, is investigating reports that China’s welfare lottery administration officials used its former training center for banquets in violation of the recent central government ban.
The Huangshan Futai Vista Manor at the foot of the famous Yellow Mountain has applied for a five-star status. It has seven themed restaurants and a wine lounge with interior decor like a royal palace. Chefs, who have studied in France for more than 10 years, serve French delicacies.
The hotel used to be a training center of the China Welfare Lottery Management Center, which is affiliated to the Ministry of Civil Affairs. In September 2011, the Sino-Ocean Land invested 60 million yuan (US$9.77 million) and converted it into a hotel, Xinhua news agency said.
The hotel, where a table costs at least 1,000 yuan, reportedly received many officials.
Lavish official spending was a common occurrence in government-run training bases around Yellow Mountain and Jiuhua Mountain in Anhui, Xinhua reported.
A waiter claimed local officials would visit every evening to have their meal, cigarettes and liquors, running up bills in the thousands, according to Xinhua.
In 2007, China banned revamps or expansions of facilities owned by the Party or government offices, which offer accommodation, reception or dining. Training centers were included in the ban.
