Probe into police link to mine thugs

AUTHORITIES are investigating claims that police in a northwestern county sheltered mine bosses who allegedly hired thugs to attack villagers protesting against excessive mining.

Results of the inquiry by a team consisting of officials from the Discipline Inspection Commission of the Communist Party, the Ministry of Public Security and a local government in Shaanxi Province, are expected next month, reported China Youth Daily yesterday.

Villagers claim continuous expansion of operations by Dongfanghong Mine Co in Hengshan County in Shaanxi since 2003 has led to land subsidence, cracks in housing and water sources drying up.

Moves were made to relocate residents, but hundreds who couldn't afford new homes with low government compensation remained and took legal action.

Some were the victims of brutal attacks. Fan Tingcai, an elected villager representative and his four family members were hacked by a group of masked men on January 30 last year. And mine opponent Wang Yonghong was hacked by 12 masked men in March last year.

Last October, 34 villagers were detained by police after they tried to obstruct operations. They were released on bail on April 28.
