Probe into suspect death at re-education center

A PROBE has opened at a central China re-education center after three former inmates said they saw a cellmate die when guards forced him to take a cold shower in winter two years ago.

Li Xiaoyong, Wang Debao and another inmate who refused to give his name said they saw guards spray a cold hose over bike thief Mu Damin in Kaifeng City Re-education Center in Henan Province.

The trio said nobody ever found out how he died because he had no family, according to today's news Website Dahe.cn.

Kaifeng Bureau of Justice said it has started a probe into the case and would not comment before the investigation was over.

Police officers at the re-education center confirmed an inmate named Mu Damin died in March 2008, but denied any torture.

Li and Wang said guards forced Mu to strip in front of all other inmates to show how "dirty and stinky" he was. The guards then sprayed cold water on him.

The man in his 50s fell down after the shower and died, the report said.
