Probe into suspicious cell death

INVESTIGATORS are probing a detainee's death in northeast China's Harbin City after his family claimed the body had multiple bruises on his head and chest. Police say he died of a cold, Beijing News reported today.

Wang Lijia, 57, died about 20 days after being detained on May 27 on charges of defrauding land compensation funds from local governments, the report said.

An official with Harbin Public Security Bureau said an investigation was started by provincial forensic experts yesterday to find out the cause of death.

Wang Lijia's son Wang Guopeng said he visited his father twice after he was taken by police and he appeared normal.

The family lost contact with Wang on June 8, after police said he had been transferred to another detention center but refused to tell him where.

The next time Wang Guopeng saw his father, it was in the mortuary. He told reporters that police told him that his father died from a fever after catching a cold.

The family found bruises on Wang's body during the autopsy on June 18, which increased their suspicion that he was beaten to death, the report said. The police didn't explain the injuries to the family.
