Probe into tour guides' commission

TOUR guides in Zhejiang Province are being paid commission of up to 50 percent of the goods sold by shops they take their tourist groups to, it has been claimed.

Tourism authorities have launched an investigation after a list of amounts circulated on the Internet, Beijing Times reported over the weekend.

According to the list, which bore the company stamp, guides for the Zhejiang Xinshijie Travel Service Co Ltd take 30 percent of the price of cutting tools and cardigans, and 50 percent of red stoneware tea set, pearls and chrysanthemum tea prices. The commission was said to have been paid to the tour group leader, the local guide and the tour bus driver.

The Xinshijie company, however, denied the list came from its office. Wang Li, deputy general manager, told the newspaper the company didn't have such a list.

Zhejiang Province Tourism Administration said officials were investigating whether the company's tour guides were acting improperly.
