Professor accused of advocating violent separatism
Police yesterday announced a list of political offenses by economics professor Ilham Tohti, a minority Uygur who is in police custody. It accuses him of leading a separatist group that advocates violence to overthrow Chinese rule in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The Bureau of Public Security for Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, said in an online statement that Ilham Tohti, a professor at the Minzu University of China in Beijing, recruited followers through a website he founded to create trouble, spread separatist thoughts, incite ethnic hatred and engage in separatist activities.
He had ties with the East Turkistan Islamic Movement terrorist group, the statement said.
It said the academic told his students that Uygurs should use violence and oppose the government, as China opposed Japanese invaders during World War II.
