Professor's verdict, sentence upheld
A MEDICAL professor said he would apply for a retrial after a court in Beijing yesterday rejected his appeal and upheld the five-and-a-half month sentence against him for hiring men to attack two people who had accused him of making fraudulent claims about the effects of his surgical procedures.
Xiao Chuanguo said he didn't understand his conviction of "creating disturbance and damaging social order" in the verdict handed down by Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court today. His lawyer Gao Zicheng said the charge should be lessened to a "domestic dispute."
Meanwhile, Peng Jian, attorney for the two men who made the accusations of fraud, Fang Xuanchang and Fang Zhouzi - who has exposed many scientific frauds in the past - said they will also request a retrial at a higher court, claiming the sentence was too lenient as Xiao should be charged with attempted murder.
Fang Xuanchang, a financial journal editor, said he was "dissatisfied" as the court hadn't responded to his request for new forensic tests and his complaints about improper legal 掳?procedures in the previous trial.
He will have a discussion with Fang Zhouzi, who did not attend court yesterday, before taking the next legal steps.
