Professor鈥檚 wife appeals for funds in US spy case
THE wife of a Chinese professor detained in the United States on spying charges proclaimed her husband innocent and appealed for donations for legal fees in a letter published by his employer, Tianjin University, yesterday.
Zhang Hao, 36, is one of six Chinese citizens — including three Tianjin University engineers — named last month in a US indictment alleging economic espionage of wireless semiconductor technology.
In a scheme that allegedly dates back to 2006, the six are accused by US prosecutors of stealing source code and designs from companies for which two of them worked — California-based Avago Technologies and Massachusetts-based Skyworks Solutions.
Prosecutors allege that they then passed the material to Chinese universities and companies.
Zhang was arrested at Los Angeles international airport on May 16 as he entered the US on the way to a conference.
The professor, who founded a chipmaking firm in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin in 2011, has been maliciously and falsely accused, his wife Fan Liping wrote. She described him as a simple man who pursued only his research.
In the letter, Fan sought donations, saying the family needed between 20 million yuan (US$3.22 million) and 35 million yuan for legal fees to fight the case.
Tianjin University has rejected the charges and said it could take legal measures to defend the school’s reputation.
