Progress on new cancer center

China's first medical center providing heavy-ion therapy for cancer patients is expected to treat 2,000 patients annually after phase one of its construction is completed in 2013.

The Lanzhou Heavy-Ion Beam Cancer Treatment Center will include a heavy-ion accelerator with four terminals, said a spokesman for the science and technology bureau of Lanzhou, capital city of Gansu Province.

The center will cost about 1 billion yuan (US$152 million), he said.
