‘Progress’ over Heywood compensation
The lawyer for the family of a British businessman murdered by the wife of disgraced former Party chief of Chongqing Bo Xilai said yesterday that some progress had been made in efforts to seek compensation.
He Zhengsheng, a Beijing lawyer for Neil Heywood’s family, said talks with the attorneys representing convicted killer Bogu Kailai had brought “initial results and some consensus.” He added: “We are making all efforts to achieve a final outcome,” without giving a timeframe.
Heywood’s murder was at the center of a corruption scandal, with Bogu’s husband dismissed from his post as Chongqing Party chief and stripped of other political positions.
Bo will stand trial tomorrow on charges of corruption and abuse of power. The abuse of power charges appear related to events surrounding Bogu’s murder of Heywood, a family associate.
Bogu was given a suspended death sentence last year after confessing to poisoning him.
Heywood is survived by a Chinese wife, Wang Lulu, and two children, who lived in a gated community in a northern Beijing suburb and attended international schools. Wang has not spoken publicly about the case and the family’s whereabouts are unclear.
Li Xiaolin, a lawyer with ties to Bogu’s mother, previously said the family were seeking up to 50 million yuan (US$8 million) compensation. The Heywood family lawyer refused to provide details about the amount sought.
