Property valuator gets 12-year jail term for grafts

A Beijing property appraiser was sentenced to 12 years in prison for conspiring with local officials to embezzle 5.71 million yuan (US$ 869,700) of relocation funds.

Zhang Tao, assistant manager of a Beijing property valuation company, was convicted of grafts by a Beijing district court, the Legal Evening News reported today.

The court said Zhang collaborated with officials of Yongding Township government and fabricated documents to gain demolition compensation of 3.4 million yuan for the mistress of Yan Yongxi, former vice mayor of Mentougou District in western Beijing.

Zhang was also accused of acquiring demolition compensations for Yan's brother.

Zhang's lawyer asked for leniency, saying Zhang didn't take the money himself and was merely an accomplice in the graft. But the court rejected the plea, saying Zhang played a major role.

Yan, who is described as "the most corrupt official in Beijing" by local media, is waiting for his verdict after being charged with taking bribes and embezzling public funds totaling nearly 42 million yuan in January.
