Proposal aims to make life better for seniors
A PROPOSAL to construct more cultural facilities for senior citizens and cope with an aging society was issued yesterday, the China National Committee on Aging said.
The proposal was jointly made by 16 departments, including the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Ministry of Culture and the CNCA.
Zhu Yong, vice director of the CNCA, said there be more than 200 million people aged 60 or above in the country next year and more than 300 million in 2025.
In 2053, China will have 487 million people aged 60 or more, about 35 percent of the population, Zhu said.
Senior citizens currently represent 13.7 percent of the total population.
"There have been many positive developments for seniors," Zhu said. "However, seniors still need more attention, facilities and services."
The proposal also urged society to respect the elderly, provide more activities that senior citizens can participate in and care for them better.
Also, museums, art galleries, memorial halls and public libraries were urged to provide free or preferential ticket prices to seniors.
