Prosecution takes over airport bomber’s case
A WHEELCHAIR-BOUND man who set off a homemade bomb at Beijing airport last month has been transferred over to the prosecution after the police completed its investigation into the case, prosecutors in Chaoyang District said yesterday.
Ji Zhongxing, 34, exploded a device outside the Arrival Hall at Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport on July 20. He lost his left forearm and a police officer who approached him sustained minor injuries.
The case was transferred to prosecutors in Chaoyang District on August 8, police said.
Ji’s lawyers Li Fangping and Liu Xiaoyuan claimed that their client “did not intend to hurt anybody.”
“He just wanted to raise awareness to his case with this extreme act,” his lawyers.
“He made the bomb with gunpowder used in firecrackers. He was so nervous that he accidentally detonated the explosive device when police approached him,” Li said.
Witnesses said Ji told others to run away before he blew the device.
Police detained Ji on July 21 and prosecutors approved his arrest on July 29.
Ji had claimed on his blog that he was paralyzed after police assistants assaulted him in Dongguan in Guangdong Province in June 2005. But his claims for compensation and demand that his attackers be punished were never met.
The local government, police and a court in Dongguan have promised to review his case.
