Prosecutor reconstructs escape of Forbidden City thief

MORE details of the headline-grabbing theft in Beijing's Forbidden City or the Palace Museum came to light after the culprit was formally arrested on May 31, the Prosecutor's Daily reported today.

Shi Baikui who stole eight jewelry boxes on display in the Palace Museum on the night of May 8 was spotted by a patrol guard. While the guard was making a report on the phone, he ran away and scaled a 10-meter-high palace wall to escape.

"He didn't jump down the wall directly," said Zhang Jun, the prosecutor in charge of the case. "He jumped onto a tree outside the wall and landed safely with tree branches giving him the cushion," Zhang said in an interview with the newspaper.

Shi was only slightly injured in the chest and legs and his abrasions had scabbed over when he was interrogated, Zhang said.

The 28-year-old thief said he lied to the guard after being spotted that he was a tourist and got lost in the palace. The guard took his word and returned to his room to report to his supervisor. Shi snatched that opportunity and disappeared into a bamboo grove and escaped, Zhang said.
