Prosecutors approve kindergarten arrest
THE arrest of the head of a kindergarten whose children were killed in a minibus crash in northwest China's Gansu Province has been approved by prosecutors.
Li Jungang, chairman of the Xiaoboshi (Little Doctor) Kindergarten, was arrested on suspicion of causing a serious accident due to negligence, the Prosecutors' Office of Zhengning County said.
The charge carries a fixed-term imprisonment of no more than three years according to China's Criminal Law.
Li illegally refitted a minibus to be used as a school bus and caused 64 children to be crammed into the nine-seat vehicle, the office said.
An investigation found that all the seats in the minibus had been removed except for the driver's.
Some children stood, while others sat on stools they brought with them.
The overloaded van collided head-on with a truck in Zhengning's Yulinzi Town last Wednesday morning, killing 19 pupils and injuring 43 others. The bus driver and a teacher also died.
The condition of two of the eight children critically injured in the crash has improved and they were moved out of the intensive care unit over the weekend, a spokesman for the Qingyang People's Hospital said.
Six are still in a critical condition while six others who suffered severe injuries, but whose lives are not in danger, are still undergoing treatment.
A local government official yesterday announced details of compensation for the bereaved families.
Each family can receive up to 436,000 yuan (US$68,656) in compensation after the children's bodies were buried, Zuo Jianghua told China National Radio yesterday.
