Prosecutors bring 8 more to court in CCTV new buidling fire case

EIGHT more people are prosecuted in the case of a blaze at China Central Television's brand new headquarters that destroyed a hotel and killed a fireman last February.

Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court today has accepted the case to hear the prosecution against the eight people responsible in the fire case, Xinhua news agency reported. The date to open the court for trial has yet to be announced.

The same court sentenced the first group of 20 people prosecuted last May in the fire case to jail terms ranging from three to seven years.

Seven of the newly-prosecuted eight people were from three construction materials companies. They were charged with using shoddy fire-proof products in the CCTV headquaters project. The shoddy fire-proof products caught fire during an illegal fireworks show to celebrate the Lantern Festival in February, 2009.

The fire engulfed a brand new hotel tower in the CCTV complex. One firefighter was killed after inhaling toxic fumes and eight others were injured. Financial damage was estimated to be over 160 million yuan.

A construction safety official for the project was also prosecuted for his negligence in the fire case.
