Prosecutors probe case of girl thrown to her death

Prosecutors are now investigating a case in which a two-year-old girl died after she was thrown to the ground by a man who argued with her mother over a parking dispute in Beijing, People’s Daily website reported yesterday.

The Beijing man surnamed Han, 42, and a driver surnamed Li quarreled with the girl’s mother in Daxing District on July 23 because she refused to move her stroller to make room for them to park their car, witnesses told the newspaper.

Han got out of the car and slapped the woman’s face. He later pulled the toddler from the stroller, lifted her above his head and threw her to the ground, according to the report. The two men then drove away. The girl died two days later.

Han was caught on July 24 and Li surrendered to police the next day.

Han was arrested on July 29 on charges of intentional homicide while Li was charged with harboring a criminal, the report said.

Police found both had served time in prison for robbery. Han had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 1996 but his penalty was commuted for good behavior. He was released from prison this year.

Han claimed during a police interrogation that he was heavily drunk and could remember nothing about the incident, Beijing Times reported.

Lawyer Xie Ruisong said even if Han was drunk his sentence wouldn’t be lenient because he should have known severe consequences would result from throwing a toddler to the ground.

The case sparked a debate online. Many expressed sorrow but some blamed the mom.
