Prosecutors to take oath of office

CHINESE procurators will be required to take an oath on taking office in a bid to enhance their sense of professional duty, according to a new regulation of the Supreme People's Procuratorate.

All procurators in the country who are newly appointed or promoted must take the oath of allegiance to the country, respect to the law and loyalty to their posts, according to the interim regulation issued by the procuratorate last week.

"The oath-taking system will help strengthen the self-building of procurator force and enhance their sense of responsibility and honor," said an official from the procuratorate who declined to be named.

When taking the oath, procurators should stand to attention while the national anthem is being played then raise their right fist and read the oath out. They must vow to carry out their duties faithfully and safeguard social justice.

Last September the procuratorate issued a basic outline of procurators' professional ethics in an effort to weed out corruption with the oath-taking system stipulated for the first time.
