Prostitution-ring sisters face trial in Chongqing
TWO sisters who allegedly made more than 100 million yuan (US$14.65 million) by forcing hundreds of women into prostitution will go on trial in Chongqing Municipality.
One of the sisters, Wang Ziqi, and the other 29 members of their ring will be tried next Tuesday at Chongqing No.5 Intermediate People's Court, charged with nine counts including organizing and leading a mafia-like organization, brokering prostitution and forcing prostitution, yesterday's Chongqing Times newspaper reported.
The other sister, Wang Wanning, will be tried in a separate case, the report said.
Chongqing No. 5 Procuratorate Office alleged the Wangs opened nine beauty salons, teahouses and hotels in Chongqing since 1994 to provide sex services, laundering the income through several corporations.
The ring lured hundreds of job-seeking women from the local labor market, prosecutors alleged.
The ring allegedly used various cruel measures to control the women's economic and mental status and limit their personal freedom by threatening, beating and confining them, resulting in injuries to 19 people.
To seek police protection, Wang Ziqi bribed many in government, prosecutors added.
Among them was Chen Tao, former deputy captain of Chongqing Police's General Security Squad, who had received 19,000 yuan from Wang Ziqi from 2005 to 2009.
Wang Ziqi and her ring members will also be charged with organizing prostitution, illegal confinement, bribing, bribe-taking, rape and sheltering a mafia-like organization, the Chongqing Times report said.
