Protecting the coastal wetland
CHINA has recovered more than 2,000 hectares of coastal wetland in the past five years following a number of conservation projects, the State Oceanic Administration said yesterday.
The projects also helped rehabilitate more than 190 kilometers of coastline, over 6,500 hectares of coastal belt and over 1,200 hectares of beaches.
An eight-year survey which ended in 2012 found that coastal wetland had shrunk by some 57 percent compared with the 1950s. The administration issued a guideline for strengthening management of wetland earlier this year, vowing to restore 8,500 hectares by 2020.
To improve protection of the marine environment, China plans to create areas where development is prohibited or limited.
