Protection of Taihu Lake prioritized

A draft regulation on the protection of freshwater resources and the ecology of Taihu Lake in Jiangsu Province has been released for public feedback.
According to the draft on the Website of the Cabinet's Legislative Affairs Office, local authorities must readjust economic structures and eliminate polluting industries with high water consumption.
Taihu has been plagued by algae due to severe industrial pollution in recent years.
New chemical and pharmaceutical enterprises, sewage outlets, garbage-recycling facilities, golf courses, floating restaurants and poultry and livestock farms will not be allowed near the lake. Fines of up to 500,000 yuan (US$73,224) for offenders are being proposed.
