Provinces prosper after 2008 quake
UP to 95 percent of rebuilding projects begun after the massive earthquake in Sichuan Province and neighboring areas have been completed.
Mu Hong, vice director of the National Development and Reform Commission, issued the figures at a press conference yesterday.
The devastating quake centered on Wenchuan County on May 12, 2008, left 87,000 people dead or missing and millions homeless.
The quake also affected neighboring Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.
After the quake, the State Council drew up plans to rebuild the 51 quake-struck county-level regions in the three provinces.
The size of the reconstruction areas totaled nearly 130,000 square kilometers.
Wei Hong, executive vice governor of Sichuan Province, told the press conference that the province had completed 94 percent of the work, in which nearly 3,000 new schools and more than 1,000 hospitals had been built or reconstructed.
Reconstruction investment in Sichuan so far has reached 796.5 billion yuan (US$122.69 billion). The money also helped renovate and reinforce 3.55 million rural and urban homes just one year after the quake. Two years later, reconstruction of 1.5 million rural homes and 250,000 homes in cities was finished.
In Gansu, investment totalling 25.5 billion yuan has helped rebuild and renovate nearly 700,000 rural homes and reconstruct roads.
In addition, all damaged temples in the province have been reinforced or reconstructed.
In Shaanxi, four severely affected counties have completed more than 95 percent of their rebuilding projects.
Mu said that not only had living conditions improved through the reconstruction projects, but the economy had rebounded strongly.
"The local economic growth has recovered, or even outperformed the level before the quake," Mu said.
Shaanxi Vice Governor Jiang Zelin said the province's Hanzhong and Baoji cities were now more prosperous with rural residents' annual disposable income 1.8 times the amount before the disaster, and that of urban residents 1.7 times higher.
Rebuilding in the quake zones is expected to be completed by late September, Mu said.
