Provincial chief faces graft probe
THE top official in north China’s Hebei Province, which is home to a city bidding to host the Winter Olympics, is under investigation for alleged corruption.
Zhou Benshun is suspected of “serious breaches of discipline and the law,” generally a euphemism for corruption, the Party’s anti-graft agency said yesterday.
The investigation comes as part of a high-profile crackdown on graft that has deposed several senior officials, notably former security chief Zhou Yongkang.
Zhou was jailed for life last month, making him the highest ranking ex-official prosecuted in decades.
Hebei is a base for heavy industry, but many of its firms have struggled in recent years as economic growth has slowed.
The city of Zhangjiakou is bidding with Beijing to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, with Almaty in Kazakhstan their only rival. The winner will be named next week.
